My childhood abuse taught me to believe that I don’t have a choice in what happens to me. I was a victim and there was no escape. As my abuse continued into adulthood, I never considered that I had a choice. People said that I “allowed” my abuse since I was an adult and should have been able to stop it, but I still thought of myself as a powerless child.
